A Visit with Grandma

We were lucky enough to ring in the big FIVE with Grandma visiting. Ava always loves when Grandma comes and she finds Grandma to be pretty darn funny. Griffin likes to show off his craziness and knows he is making us all laugh.

Something amazingly special that Grandma brought for Ava for a birthday present is a handmade prairie girl dress, complete with a bonnet, apron and bloomers. Ava is obsessed with Little House on the Prairie and my mom and I were talking several months ago how I used to LOVE the prairie dress that she made for ME when I was in Elementary school. She said I would put in on immediatly after school and just hang out in it. I remember how special it was and now seeing Ava interested in something similar is really neat. So when she surprised Ava with a dress, it was just so sentimental to me. Of course, Ava can't fully understand the time and thought my mom put into this dress, but one day it will mean so much to her. I am so lucky to have such a thoughtful mother and loving grandmother to my children. Truly, I am.

Thanks for visiting, mom, we love it when you are here.

My Little Brute!

I took these pictures while hanging outside with the kids and thought I'd try to capture Griffin's activeness. From stomping in mud puddles to trying to climb trees, he is just so curious and all over the place. A few days later I made the mistake of dressing him in white and found it quite humorous that his shirt was soaked in a mixture of watermelon, chocolate, dirt and grass, only to be titled "Little Brother". Funny!

Spring Art and Music Exhibit

Commotion in the Ocean!

Proudly displaying her recent artwork, Ava really enjoyed showing us her new art techniques and final products, as well as, numerous musical numbers that we've heard for months now and it finally makes sense ;)

We are really going to miss MAS and all the wonderful exposure and interest it brought to Ava in the area of musical and performing arts.

52 Weeks of Family Photos

So I tried this last year and didn't make it through month 3, so I'm going to give it another try.....though no promises. Essentially, all it entails is that we take a picture of our family, or those that we can, once a week so that mom and/or dad is included in the picture. We are GREAT about taking pictures, only one of us is always BEHIND the camera and never in the pictures themselves. I want the kids to be able to see me at my best and worst, lol, when they look back on these. Most importantly, I want to capture what day-to-day, week-to-week life looks like for our family. And since life includes me with them, why not capture that? So here goes January (We had one from Christmas Eve, so I decided to start it a week earlier than the new year).

December 24, 2011
Having just visited with my family, and Grandma staying with us, we were all fired up and ready for Christmas. Ava had a tough time falling asleep this night, but it was all better the next morning!

January 1, 2012
New Years 2012! Here's to a New Year full of health and happiness for all of our family and friends. We had a NYE party the night before with several of our friends coming over. Ava stayed up until well past 1:00 a.m., making it the latest she has ever stayed up. Griffin somehow fell asleep with 7 other children running and yelling, around 9:00 that night. Needless to say, we are all a little tired, but looking forward to our black-eyed peas and cornbread that's been simmering all day in the crock pot.

January 7, 2012
A day early, but this was taken on January 7, for my birthday celebration. Ryan, Ava and Griffin surprised me with breakfast in bed (mommy's favorite, peppermint mocha from Starbucks and pumpkin loaf). I was spoiled all day long and given a massage for my present.....exactly what I needed! That night, Gigi and Poppy took the kids and Ryan and I had drinks and dinner. It was SO NICE to get to sit down and talk, like we REALLY talked and had so much to say that wasn't all about our babies. Just so nice!

January 15, 2012
At Chuck E. Cheese for our neighbors 2nd birthday party and thought we'd sneak in a family picture, CEC style! Fun way to mix it up a bit.

January 25, 2012
Just hanging out in our bed. One of our favorite times of the night is after bath and we just play and hang out in our bed. The play tends to get kind of rough between the sibs, so someone usually ends up in tears. I now understand why my mom always said, "someone's going to get hurt." I am my mother. Strange how that happens.

Daddy Daughter Dance 2012

Catching up on pictures from past months.....

In February Ava had a date with daddy and her friend/neighbor to go to the Daddy Daughter Dance. They had a blast! Ryan said she danced and mingled the entire time and afterward they got ice cream. Aves chose her entire outfit. Funny, the moment I saw the dress in the store, I KNEW she would pick the purple one....it just looked like her!

Happy Birthday My Sweet Five!

Dear Ava,

Tonight you went to sleep on such a high. On your last day to be a four-year-old, we had your birthday party at the "baking place" that you requested. Classmates and neighbors, most importantly, friends, filled the room and you guys worked together to make hand-made pizzas and decorate cupcakes with every sugar filled goody you could imagine. Having grandma in town just for your birthday and Gigi and Poppy coming to celebrate with you, as well, just sent you through the moon. Little do you know that you will awaken to a room filled with balloons that will no doubt start your actual birthday off with even more giddiness.

Tonight, on the eve of your birthday, you came into our room at nine o'clock saying you couldn't sleep. I don't blame you. It's a lot of excitement and anticipation turning FIVE. You laid in our bed and we tickled your back. You told us that four and a half was boring and you can't wait to be five. I love that about you. You've always been so embracing to change and see the positive in new circumstances. Ava, you are incredibly smart and capable, motivated and determined. You are so independent it's almost scary and you have so much to offer those around you. Whether it's an embracing hug or a witty joke, you are so full of life and expression.

We all love you so very much and can't wait to see how these strong character traits manifest themselves into the successful and caring person that you will become.

Happy Fifth Birthday my big girl!

Love,

Mommy

Why Can't They Take Good Pics With Me?

Some of the kids best pictures together happen to be with Uncle Aaron. What's going on here? Are they not as elated to be taking a picture with their own mother? ;)

I Love a Dirty Kid!

Seriously. I love when my kids dig in and get dirty. They are both pretty intense and focused (age-appropriate) when it comes to doing something they love....exploring, creating, building, discovering or just plain old playing. Griff and I sat outside in this beautiful winter weather one morning and I just watched as he wrote with chalk and used a paint brush dipped in water to go over it. He spilled the water no less than 3 times and was covered in chalk from head to toe, but OH! did he ever enjoy this simple activity.

The Wedding Performance

Ava loves to put on performances for us and this day, I believe she was getting married. As you can tell, she is quite the interpretive dancer.

What are we up to these days?

I feel like I haven't gotten a chance to really sit down and write out what's going on with us these busy days.....so, here's an update for the record.

Update:
We've been in our home in Frisco now, almost 2 years. Ryan is working from home in his office here and I continue to serve my role as the domestic engineer and answer to the two bosses in MY "office" every day. Haha.

Ava is still at the Musical Arts Schoolhouse going 3 days a week, T,W,Th from 8:00-11:45, which is perfect for us. I don't know what I'm going to do next year when she starts Kindergarten and has to leave us for 5 whole days. And I'm not sure what she's going to do, either, lol. She is more than ready to attend Kindergarten, however, so no issues there. She has some really good friends on our street, already, and one will be entering Kinder at the same time, which is neat. She is about to embark on her 4th season of soccer and tells us that she used to think it was "boring" but now she likes it. She has been on the same team since the beginning and formed some fun relationships with those girls.

Griffin is going to gymnastics once a week at a gymnastics facility during open gym time. It's great because it's not real structured and he can do whatever activity he wants. He loves to jump on the trampoline and has recently started getting both feet off the ground. He is also jumping off the ground with both feet! He goes to the gym kid's club on Tuesdays and Thursdays for an hour, while I work out, so that gives him a great chance to socialize with peers and teachers without me. I don't think we are going to start him in a preschool until next year, when he is three and half. Seriously, will he be three next year? Crazy! He is just my little buddy and we find plenty to fill our mornings.

Our two cats, Boo and Goose, are doing well and continue to annoy us with their neediness, haha. But Ava and Griffin love them, as do we, so they are just part of the family.

Routine:
Mondays are great because we take our time getting up and out, playing in the early morning hours. We usually hit the grocery store in the late morning/early afternoon fulfilling our lunch menu by gobbling up samples and food. Afternoons are playtime, craft time, pretend time and nap time for some. While Griffin naps, Ava has some "rest time" where she plays quietly by herself. She has gotten pretty good at doing it most days, some days we watch a movie together or just sit together adn play or read.

Tuesdays and Thursdays we are out the door by 7:50 to get Ava to school by 8:00. We eat breakfast at home most mornings, others we are running around so much that we have to eat it in the car. It's not easy eating oatmeal in the car, but Ava has gotten used to it. She's the staller, so it's usually her to eat in the car and Griffin at home. Griff and I hit the FAC for some exercise and playtime for Griff. We come home and play or run errands. His teachers there love him and he loves to go and see them. We pick up sissy at 11:45 from school. We get home and eat lunch which ranges from macaroni and cheese to chicken salad and cream cheese crackers and cheese to peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Always with a side of fruit.

Wednesdays are pretty much the same as T/Th, but Griffin and I go to open gymnastics from 10-11, where he gets to burn a lot of energy.

Fridays we usually have a playdate set up or we go to my bi-monthly MOPS (Mother's of Preschoolers) meetings. Fridays are Fundays.

I love the weekends and family time. We begin our Saturdays by working out at the FAC and treat the family to Saturday lunch out. It usually ends up being Jason's Deli or McAlisters. Now that soccer is in session, we have late afternoon games to attend, which works well. I just love hanging out with my family.

Ickley and Onzest

I can't remember if I've mentioned Ava's two "friends", Ickley and Onzest, before. Well, she has two imaginary friends that join us for a lot of errands and festivities. We also celebrate their birthdays multiple times a months, must be nice to have so many, huh? Some days they are turning 8, others they turn 14 and yet, other days, they turn "old enough to drive a car". Onzest is more of the wild child, needing to be reminded and redirected quite often. Ickley is very low-key and cooperates quite nicely. Every once in awhile "Carrie" visits us and she really doesn't like to follow the rules, but with gentle reminders, she is able to be set straight by Ava. These friends have been around for about 2 years, but have really made a more constant appearance in the past year or so. I have NO idea where Ava thought of their names, but they are great names, don't you think?

On this particular night, before bed, Ava made a princess birthday cake for one of their birthdays (I can't keep up with WHO was celebrating) and we all joined in on the celebration. Don't get confused, as the cake toppers are really just princess, Ickley and Onzest cannot be seen (by us, anyway).

20 months old!

I would say this month there has been a very significant vocabulary explosion. Griffin attempts words all the time and about 70% of the time I understand what he's saying. The other 30% of the time he gets kind of discouraged and frustrated that I don't know what he's saying. Par for the course, I suppose. He has added many new words to his repertoire, I'm sure I'll forget them all:

man
tea ("dee")
room
phone
fall
night night
bowl
spoon ("boon")

Favorites:
The other day when Ava and Griffin were playing in the guest bedroom (where Ava has been sleeping as of late), they accidentally pushed something on the TV that made it go fuzzy and LOUD! Griff freaked and ran out screaming. So now he likes to remind us of this by doing his scary face (hands in fists up by his chin and trembling) and pointing the room and saying "room". He tells me about it no less than 5 times a day.

Another story he is obsessed with telling is about Uncle Aaron and his remote control helicopter. He thinks it's hilarious that Uncle Aaron tried to land it on his head and will repeatedly pat his head and say "vvvvvvvv" multiple times a day.

He is being such a momma's boy lately. He'll wrap his hands so tightly around my neck and hold onto me. He is such a snuggler. I love it!

When we go to the Athletic Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays I love seeing his excitement when I drop him off. He has two favorite teachers, Chelsea and Jade, who both adore him and he loves them as well. It's so neat to see other people love on my child because he feels it and loves to go there. They have taught him how to say Chelsea and Jade in his own Griffin way.

Griffin whistles! He has listened to Ava teach herself and at first we thought it was a fluke, but no, he'll whistle when we ask him to. I'll put the video on soon.

Health and Wellness:
Griffin weighs right around 26 pounds as of last week. He ended up at the doctor last Monday for a possible ear infection, as he was very inconsolable the Saturday before, holding onto his ear. Once we gave him motrin, he seemed better, but I wanted to take him in anyway. He didn't have an ear infection but turned out he had RSV. Thank goodness he didn't have difficulty breathing like last year, but he had a cough and was congested for about 10 days. He rebounded much better and only needed one breathing treatment for a coughing episode one night.

I cannot believe we are on our way to TWO! It will be here in a few short months and it makes me so sad. I mean, of course, I'm so grateful to have a healthy and happy boy, but he is such a toddler now and no longer much baby left.
