I'm so PROUD of my little ballerina!

Ava started dance and truly LOVES it! She was a little hesitant at first because I wasn't going to be in the class with her. But once she saw the studio and Ms. Carissa's picture (our friend and owner of the studio) she felt at ease. Then, her friends began to show up and it wasn't a big deal at all. She walked right in and did her thing.

From what I can see through the window, she is following the directions and listening to her teacher, whom she talks about all the time and adores. Mommy was a little nervous that she might just do her own thing, but she is an active participant in dance class, which tells me it is something she is genuinely interested in and loves. Maybe it's an age thing and she can handle it better, but she has never been so eager to go to an activity before. She told Ryan and I, "I can't wait to go to dance!".

Anyway, I'm just a bit PROUD b/c she handled like such a big girl!

Here she is on the way to her first dance class.
Waiting to enter into the studio.
Slowly walking in and taking it all in.
All done. Looking for mommy to tell her all about it.

This morning on her way to her second dance class. The smile says it all.

Avaisms

Ryan and I were talking about her funny words today that are just too cute to correct.

opameal = oatmeal

harmonitor = harmonica

Laurie Burtoner (grandma's name, somewhat) = Laurie Berkner (on Noggin)

Chickel A = Chick fil A

=======================================

Some cute statements she has said lately:

Ava: ::pointing to McDonald's:: "Look mommy. The Farmer's Market"

Mommy: ::huh?::
(did I already post this, ignore me if I did)
========================================

Mommy: ::singing:: "I'm soooo glad I'm here, sooooo glad I'm here, sooooo glad I'm here. Everydaaaaaaay"

Ava: "I'm so glad you are here too mommy"

Dog Park with Boomer

Ava got to go to the dog park with her new pal, Boomer (Gigi and poppy's new doggy). She had a blast watching him run, exploring and of course, digging in the dirt.

Happy Birthday Gigi and Poppy!

Dear Gigi and Poppy,

I enjoyed celebrating both of your birthdays with you last weekend. I also wanted to share some photos with you of another weekend that I had tons of fun with you, when we went to the Carnival. As you got to see, I had an absolute blast! Riding the swing two, almost three times, screamining like the well, um, little girl that I am and grinning ear-to-ear the entire time. Here are some fabulous pictures that my mommy was able to capture of my experience at the carnival, or rodeo as I call it.

Happy Birthday!
Love,
Ava

Let the Rain Fall Down!

Finally....the rain came. And when rain comes, Ava goes. It was perfect timing as we came home from her second day of school and it allowed us to celebrate a good day for even just a little bit longer.

She had to rush to finish her snack. Once that was done, shoes were off and fun was had!She had a blast! I actually seize any chance when it rains (barring there is no lightning) to go outside and play. And Ava is no different. It was a favorite, favorite pasttime of mine when I was little. Something about getting soaked to the very last thread and playing as you please, even with no toys or tangible objects to keep your attention. Just you and the rain. Very liberating. Singing and dancing and running and playing. Loves!

Girls Weekend

Ava and mommy went on our first annual Girls Trip to Dallas with mommy's best friend from high school and college, Kara and her daughter Katelin. Actually the annual girls' trips have been around for about 5 years, but have only recently included children. Boy have objectives and itineraries changed now that these adventurous girls have entered the picture.

Used to be finding the best hotel to stay in so it was easy access to all the hot spots and prime shopping areas. Now, we needed to make sure we were located conveniently close to the American Girl doll store and as always, good shopping. Having the girls join us this year was so much fun and very tiring.

Katelin is almost 4 years old and just like her mom, a FABULOUS shopper. She and Ava will get along great during future girls weekends, which will be so neat to experience with them.

Here are the girls posing with w/ what Ava deemed as "Amanda" in Old Navy. Miss Aves insisted I take a picture of her with the mannequin and was truly happy to hug her. Katelin was such a great sport and appeased Aves, something of which occurred pretty frequently on said weekend. The girls are just so CUTE together!
All 4 of us! The girls posing on stage after watching a 45-minute puppet show of "Cinderella and the Stinky Slipper".
Kara and Katelin at the American Doll store enjoying brunch. Oh and Savannah made her debut as well, sitting beside Katelin.

Ava roaming around the store looking for photo opportunities. Can't say the apple doesn't fall far from the tree there. We had such a whirlwind weekend; shopping, eating, swimming, puppet-showing, shopping, and eating some more. So much fun and we can't wait to get together again next year!

SHOW, don't just TELL

I try my best to implement the "show, don't just tell" theory that we worked so hard to achieve as teachers, in my best practices while at home with Ava. It's difficult to practice this theory day-to-day because sometimes it seems like it's just easier to say "because I said so" or "it is what it is", but what will that really teach her? (Again, I'm not saying I haven't done this....I'm just really cognisant of trying NOT to do that).

Here are some questions she has posed and some "experiments" we've tried.

=========================================

Ava: "Is this washable?"
She asked me this in the car on our way home from Chik-fil-A, regarding her nugget container. We made guesses (hypotheses) as to what would happen if we washed it and got it wet.

Ava's hypothesis: It will tear.
Mommy's hypothesis: The container will get soft.

Experiment: A bowl of water and the paper container. I just let her go with it. She started out by washing it with a paper towel.
Then, just submerging the container in the water.
Discovered that the container is like paper and will tear if it gets wet.
Had fun tearing!

=========================================

Ava: "What does cinnamon taste like?"

Experiment: Let the curious toddler make her own cinnamon concoction to decide whether or not she likes it. Result? Not so much.
============================================
Ava: "What are raisins?"

Experiment: Set out grapes in the sun for about 2 weeks......VOILA! Raisins!

First Day of Preschool

We did it! And I do mean WE!

Ava starting preschool was a long-awaited, almost dreadful (for me-I'll be honest) milestone that we approached this week. She will only go for 2 days a week from 9-2. That seemed like a long time to me, but after trying it out, it will work very well with our schedule. Tuesday was orientation/open house. Ryan and I took her to her classroom and stayed for a few minutes. She couldn't care less that we were there. We told her we'd be back in a while and said goodbye. She ignored us. She was fine. Once we came back, after an hour or so, and she saw us outside the door, she started to whimper. She did great!

I appreciate that the philosophy at our preschool, "work is planned with a process rather than product emphasis, which fosters a sense of accomplishment and pride." I look forward to her future masterpieces and learning in general, as this learning style is absolutely Ava's style. She doesn't learn well under rigidity and regulations. As I've posted before, I've shown her activities and she'll come up with her "own" way to do them. Afterall, there is never a "right" way, and she is proof-positive of this. I can remember doing a "Wheels on the Bus" activity with her at about 18 months and I cut out all of the items we sing about: wipers, horn, wheels, etc. She insisted, insisted that we add a pig and a sheep to the bus. So of course I had to make those.

On a side note, I was the total opposite as a child. I needed and thrived on work being "right" and following rules. It's is captivating how each individual child learns differently. Something of which I knew as a teacher, but now as a parent, I can appreciate it much more.

If Ava is told buttons and blocks aren't supposed to be mixed, she simply will not be interested in the activity and move on. When she is told that blocks belong over here, seperate from buttons, I can tell she wonders why? Why can't I play with blocks and buttons together? In fact, some of her most imaginative and creative play comes from mixing and playing with things that are not "supposed to be this" or "used for that". She'll take spoons and pretend they are balloons; holding, er...flying them high above her head, step stools and torn up pieces of toilet paper are birthday cakes, turkey basters are lollipops that are licked on during another activity. Anyway, I digress.

When looking at preschools, like every parent, I just wasn't sure which philosophy I wanted Ava exposed to: curriculum-based, play-based, combination, etc. After a lot of thought about my individual child, I am grateful that Ava's learning style is very much aligned with the preschool's philosophy that children should learn through play and take a "hands-on" approach. They have set up a schedule that is a good balance of structure and free choice. Also, there is a strong emphasis on routine, which will also be very beneficial and comforting.

Ava decided that she wanted to do stamp work on that morning. She was so proud of her "EI-O" artwork that when I walked in she raced over to grab it from her cubby to show me.
Here she is with her teacher, Ms. Lauren and hanging onto Daddy's leg. Ms. Lauren is the sweetest, kindest person. She has been teaching preschool for 18 years and Ava loves to talk about her. When we left Ava initiated giving her a hug AND a kiss, which doesn't happen often.
Here is Ava's lunch, ready to go, note and all. Ava's first day of lunch consisted of a turkey sandwich (barely eaten), veggie booty (halfway eaten), canteloupe (all gone) and string cheese (all gone). They indicated on her daily form that she "ate well", lol.

Btw, I am loving our reuseable snack bags from WasteNotSaks, thanks from a recommendation from one of my "virtual" friends and the idea to use them from Jill.

And here is the pretty princess all ready to go on her first day! It wasn't all smiles once we got there though. She asked me to come inside for a few minutes, which of course I did. I wanted to make our goodbye as fast and painless as possible because I knew that if I saw her upset, I would get upset and she would see that. NOT what I wanted her to see. If I continued to be upbeat and positive, she would totally feed off of that. So, once I told her to have a good day and I'd see her soon, she started crying. I had to leave b/c my tears were coming.....SOON! I told her I loved her and said goodbye. I couldn't even make it out to the car before the tears were rolling down my cheeks. Once I got to the car, I talked to Jill and Keri, who've been through it before and calmed down. My only saving grace was that the director had encouraged us to call if we wanted them to check on our children. I called about 20 minutes after dropping her off and she was SO FREAKING nice about it. She not only accepted but encouraged me to call back as much as I wanted. So she went and checked on Ava and said she was doing great! She wished she had a camera to show me that she was playing and doing fine. That was all I needed.

Smiling for me while playing. You can kind of see her heart on the inside of her palm. Something that I read in my almighty-Parents-mag about doing after reading the Kissing Hand. We actually started it when she transitioned to the big girl bed and she asked for it for school.

When I picked her up, she was sound asleep. She loved that she got to wake up to me rubbing her back. She kept telling me how surprised she was. It was so peaceful in her room. Kuddos to the teachers for getting eight 2 year olds to sleep so easily. WOW!
So all in all, a great experience. I'm sure it will take some adjustment for both of us, but we are so pleased with Ava's success!

Practicing her "balleting"

Ava starts dance, or "ballet-ing" as she has called it, soon and she is so excited! She'll be taking a morning class with some of her friends, so it will be a great experience for all, I'm sure.

Wordless Wednesday: Fresh Flowers From Neighbors

How neat it was to wake up to fresh flowers on our doorstep from our neighbors. We love them!
